Frequently asked questions
How does a web site work?
When you decide to build a website, there are three costs: Domain name, Web Hosting, and Web designer. The domain name is purchased through a domain registrar. The web designer then creates your site an uploads it to a Web Host. The Web host retains the files that create your web site on their equipment and when the public visits your web site, their browser directs them to the server where the web hosts store your files. If you like, we can take care of all three transactions for you.
What distinguishes a web "page"?
A web page is any specific .html file on your web site. As an example of pages on this web site: Home, city hall, community, business, calendar, and contact are all web pages. Anything that I upload for you "as-is" is simply a document and requires no charge. Any documents that you wish to have linked to, such as .PDFs are NOT specific pages. One page can link to many seperate documents. This is an example of one page linking to several documents.
What if we hire you and you become abducted by aliens?
When your account is created, you will be supplied with the necessary information for another designer to login and edit your web site. Our contract protects you from having to pay for services that are not rendered - you can fire me at anytime. As a precautionary measure, I have backup designers willing to take over for me, should I become incapacitated. You will be supplied with their contact information.
Who owns what?
Your web site is your property. Everything that has been uploaded to your server is copyrighted to your organization. I will not delete or alter files. All that we ask is that you allow us to promote your site in the Le Martian Studios portfolio and possibly provide us with a customer testimonial. If you fire me and hire somone else, we ask that you retain the "web design by Le Martian Studios" at the bottom of your site until significant changes have been made or we request its removal.
How do we submit changes to the site?
You can provide the material for your site in the form of a Microsoft Word document or in the body of an email. Turn around time is typically less than 5 hours but may take up to 24 depending on what is required to enter the changes and the time of day it is submitted. This is what I do all day long, so don't be surprised when the turn around time is only a few minutes. Once the changes have been made, A response email will be sent to you notifying you of the task completion for your review.
Can we log in to make our own changes to the site?
Because we take great pride in the visual quality of our creations and your site will be in the Le Martian Studios portfolio, we discourage clients from making changes to the site they've hired us to manage. We realize that sometimes it's just imperative that the client is able to add content on the fly. If this is the case we will create for you a fully customizable Google doc and an editing account for you. Example
How does payment work?
Construction cost is paid 1/2 down as a deposit and the second half is due upon completion and upload to the internet. We will not upload until the prototype meets the client's satisfaction. An online version of your prototype will be available online at this web address until the day of publishing. Monthly costs begin the day the site goes public. Monthly costs can be paid yearly in advance or monthly. You can remit payment via check, or I can set up a Paypal account that autoomatically deducts payments monthly.
